Jennifer's Dollhouse

Print PDF

I cannot remember when exactly I fell in love with miniatures. I have been deeply fascinated by this lilliputian pastime for as long as I can remember. There used to be a dolls' house show at a local mall every year when I was little. They were generally quite popular at that time. So my very patient parents took me and my siblings to this show and I would spend hours just absorbed in all the houses and vignettes that other like-minded individuals laboured long and hard to create.

John Levene reviews James Cameron's AVATAR

Print PDF

Even though Avatar has come and gone, and winged its way into the record books, I would still like to add my simple, deeply-felt, and hopefully, creatively interesting point-of-view. I saw Avatar twice, once with my best friend Rand, who loves movies, and the other time with my wife, Jennifer. Both times I came out of there absolutely overwhelmed by the visual effects. If someone asked me for another $15 after the film, I’d have paid it. Remember my age. Very rarely would I want to double-pay or double-tip for a meal or anything else, but I would’ve paid another $15 on the way out (as if James Cameron hasn’t made enough on it ~ and well-deserved, too).

A Fine Day For A Snow Patrol

As if the car show wasn't enough excitement for one week, there was one more added delight, which ended up being so much more enjoyable than I had anticipated.  We were lucky enough to get tickets for Snow Patrol's last date on their very long tour, at The Wiltern theatre in Los Angeles.  To be totally honest, it was my wife Jennifer that discovered the band about a year ago, and like any good husband, I desired to show interest in her musical taste.  I am very happy to report that I absolutely love most of their music.  The beautifully written lyrics, and tight, "together" music, along with singer Gary Lightbody's thoroughly individual and melodic interpretation of the lyrics move me.
